Careers in Medical Speech Language Pathology

According to the 2011 ASHA Membership Survey, 38% of SLPs are employed in health care settings, including 15% in non-residential health care facilities (outpatient clinics or doctor’s offices), 13% in hospitals, and 10% in residential health care facilities (rehab or skilled nursing facilities). Medical SLPs treat patients from birth through 100+ and may diagnose and treat a wide range of speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders. They may also function as members of multidisciplinary or interprofessional treatment teams, provide counseling to patients and their families, and educate other health care staff about cognitive-communication, language, and swallowing disorders. This talk will cover what speech pathologists do in the medical setting, what skills are required, and how to begin preparing for a medical SLP career.

This session will cover:

  • How to prepare for field placement and CFY interviews
  • A day in the life of a medical SLP
  • How to transition from school to career in medical SLP
  • Resources for professional development in medical settings
  • Vignettes of interesting patients
This event is sponsored by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and is a part of Adelphi Manhattan Center Spring Lecture Series.
