Diagnostic Dilemmas: Trauma and Externalizing Behaviors in Youth and Adolescence

The day to day challenges that come for adolescents who were victims of childhood trauma are complex and pervasive throughout life. This intensive workshop will focus on helping clinicians to identify childhood trauma in adolescent clients presenting with chief complaints of behavioral problems. In addition, it will help clinicians to understand the changes made in DSM V which are connected to our new understanding of trauma and its implications. We will review diagnostic evaluations and help to decipher between the various diagnosis related to externalizing behaviors as well as treatments. The primary goal is to help prevent traumatized youth from being labeled as “bad kids” when the reality is that they are victims of trauma, and acting out in different ways as a result. By the conclusion of this workshop. clinicians will feel much more comfortable knowing when to do a detailed trauma screening, and how to do it to avoid misdiagnosis.


  1. Attendees will be able to identify the changes from DSM IV to DSM V regarding externalizing behaviors and the associated diagnosis.
  2. Attendees will be able to analyze the differences both in diagnosis and treatment of the diagnosis falling under the category of Disruptive, Impulse-Control, and Conduct Disorders.
  3. Attendees will learn the links between childhood trauma and externalizing behaviors.
  4. Attendees will learn about the common misdiagnosis children are given with complex trauma histories and how to appropriately screen to avoid misdiagnosis
Matthew Lorber, MD, MPA

Matthew Lorber, M.D., M.P.A.

Matthew Lorber, M.D., is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and the Chief of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, New York. He currently serves on the mental health advisory board of directors of The Andrew Kukes Foundation for Social Anxiety. He served as a pediatric expert in AKFSA’s Social Anxiety: The Untold Story, a video teaching health professionals how to treat Selective Mutism and Social Anxiety. Dr. Lorber is considered an expert in psychopharmacology and has lectured on the most novel treatments of Social Anxiety, Selective Mutism, OCD, ADHD, Depression, and Eating Disorders. 

Dr. Lorber has been at the forefront in combating myths and stigma surrounding children’s mental health and earned a Masters in Public Administration with a public health focus from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He is devoted to mental health and education, and has taught physicians, medical students and allied health professionals at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Albert Einstein School of Medicine, New York Medical College and SUNY Upstate University of Medicine earning multiple teacher of the year awards. As part of his community outreach, Dr. Lorber is a weekly commentator on the talk radio show Angels on Air which promotes children’s health and safety. Dr. Lorber has had multiple media and television appearances including CBS, ABC, WPIX, Up to the Minute,, and Focus on Health TV. Dr. Lorber was the winner of the esteemed “Patients’ Choice Award” in 2010, 2011 and 2014 a national award for top rated physicians based on patients’ reviews and overall satisfaction rankings.

New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education hours. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.”

Cancellation Policy

Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows.  We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
